Scugog – 2020 was a devastating year with 114 fire fatalities in the province of Ontario. This was the highest number of fire fatalities in over 10 years. Unfortunately, the common denominator in many of these fires is a lack of working smoke alarms. Locally, Scugog Fire & Emergency Services has recently responded to several calls where homes have not been properly equipped to detect smoke or carbon monoxide (CO). As a result, the Department has launched a new initiative to encourage community members to test their smoke & CO alarms while adhering to provincial stay at home guidelines. Local households are encouraged to participate in the Alarmed at Home Challenge for their chance to win a Scugog Fire prize pack.

To participate:

  1. Visit my.scugog.ca/alarmedathome to learn more about smoke and CO alarm requirements and maintenance tips, as well as how to test your alarms.
  1. Take a photo or video of someone in your household testing your smoke and/or CO alarms and submit your entry by doing one of the following:
    • Visit my.scugog.ca/alarmedathome. Under the “stories” tab, upload your entry.
    • Use the hashtag #AlarmedAtHome and upload your entry to social media. Tag @TwpOfScugog on Twitter or Instagram or @TownshipOfScugog on Facebook.
    • Email your entry to fire@scugog.ca.

    It literally only takes a few seconds to ensure your family WILL be safe!

    As a proud active member of both the Port Perry Firefighters Association as well the Scugog Fire & Emergency Services Team, we certainly practice what we preach.
